CHAPTER NINE
My Birthday
Over the last eleven months, I had accumulated a lot of money and gifts. Brian had given me a room in the house just for my stuff. He fixed it up pretty cool. I especially liked my race car set and my stereo. Sometimes the guys just gave me stuff they thought I would like.
At my house, my birthday was no big deal. I had the unfortunate luck for it to always fall near Mother’s Day. That was a big deal. Mom would have a party on Sunday to celebrate Mother’s Day and invite all her sisters. The cake would always read “Happy Mother’s Day” on top and “Happy Birthday” on the bottom.
Mom would have a list with our names and the chores we had to do. I had to clean my room, sweep the sidewalks and patio, and clean the bathroom. When I was done, Mom would inspect. Her mood would determine if it was good enough—no matter how clean it was. She never liked sharing Mother’s Day with me and it showed in her attitude.
“Timmy, you call this clean?”
I walked into the bathroom knowing this is a very bad way to start my birthday. She grabbed the back of my neck, dragged me a few steps and pushed my face into the toilet. I tried bracing myself with both hands so my face wouldn’t go to the bottom. That pissed her off and she knocked my hands down.
“You think this is clean!”
She pulled my face out of the toilet and I gasped for air. She raised her fists and swung hard four or five times. She put my face back in the toilet and explains in her sick way, “If this was clean, this wouldn’t bother you.”
She rubbed my face all around the toilet seat. I was crying. She had broken me on my birthday. She let go and I dropped to my knees. She stomped out and I reached for a towel to dry my face off. I cleaned up the mess and hoped it could pass the next inspection.
Mom had three personalities: happy, sad, and really pissed off. Ironically happy and sad would always end up pissed off before the day was over. These personalities were intensified at any family get together. That afternoon, my Mom’s sisters and their families came over. We got along well with our cousins Kim and Katrina. They understood our mom because they lived with the same stuff. We never really talked about it. We just understood each other. Dad would barbecue, drink beer, and talk to the guys.
Having Mom’s side of the family over was unpredictable and very entertaining. It was great. The four women had so much hate they could start World War III. At any time, an argument could lead to a fistfight. If Grandma showed up, she could really fuel the fire. The kids would sit down and watch the fireworks.
Moms’ sisters got into it. Every name in the book was used and I think they made up a few.
